Ringworm Cats Can Be Treated!

Ringworm is what? A cat with ringworm or known as a ringworm cat is caused from a fungal skin disease. The ringworm stems from a microscopic group of fungal organisms. The group is called dermatophytes. The ringworm attacks the outer dead skin layers, claws and hair.

The 3 different dermatophytes are (M. Canis) Microsporum canis, (M.Gypseum) Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

Microsporum gypseum is typically from cats that dig in contaminated soil.

Trichophyton mentagrophytes is given to cats that have been subjected to rodents burrows or the rodents.

Microsporum canis accounts around seventy five to ninety eight percent of the ringworm cases discovered in cats. It is estimated that up to twenty one percent of cats are known as asymptomatic carriers. (these are cats that carry ringworm but exhibit no signs of ringworm). Microsporum canis is exceedingly infectious. Ringworm can be propagated from cat to cat, dog to cat, cat to dog, cat to human and human to cat etc.

Did you know that cats can get ringworm from contact with infected animals, pets and even humans. Cats can also get ringworm when in contact with infected grooming equipment, furniture, carpet and even bedding. The spores are attached to the cat hairs and can remain inaffective for over twelve months.

How do you know if your cat has ringworm today?

The common signs are round patches of hair loss especially around the limbs and head area. The ringworm, by the way, can also occur to other areas of your cats body. There can be grey patchy baldness areas, onychomycosis, seborrhea sicca or flaky dry skin.

The methods to diagnose a cat with possible ringworm is by a culture sample, biopsy, microscopic examination or by using a black light.(Wood’s lamp)

When using the Wood’s lamp, the hair shafts will actual glow a fluorescent green if ringworm is apparent. As a reminder that only about 50% of the strains will show when applying this method.

The microscopic examination method is a quick diagnosis but may be inaccurate if the sample taken has no spores. The vet is examining the hairs for microscopic fungal spores. Spores can be difficult to see and is better to have an experienced mycologist do the examination.

The culture sample process is the best method because the exact species of fungus can be determined. It usually takes about ten days to perform the culture and know the findings. If the lesions are unknown, than the next step would be a biopsy.

The best course of action is to immediately treat your cat and the cats environment as soon as possible if the cat has ringworm. If you live in a multi cat situation, it is best to treat all cats. If you have healthy cats by the by, ringworm will at times resolve itself over a period of two to four months. The reason for the treatments is to quicken the process to prevent the transfer of ringworm infection to pets, animals and individuals.

Dips and shampoos are the best procedures to treat ringworm cats. Bathing your cat can be done every four to six days for two to four weeks. When using lime sulfur dips, the cats hair coat will turn yellowish, however, this will usually fade in time.

Griseofulvin is usually used as an antifungal drug for cats. Griseofulvin inhibits fungal cell division which does allow the cats immune system to gain control and fight off the ringworm infection. Griseofulvin has side effects and necessary precautions that you should be aware of before starting the ringworm treatment. You can also ask your vet about other drugs as ketoconazole (Nizoral), Itraconazole and Terbinafine (Lamisil). You may also want to ask your vet about a ringworm vaccine known as Fel-O-Vax MC-K made by Fort Dodge. It still may or may not be available.
